Next doping scandal in biathlon: IBU temporarily bans 9 Kazakhs

The IBU announced on Thursday the provisional suspension of nine Kazakh athletes for anti-doping policy violations. Around a week before the start of the World Cup in Pokljuka (November 30th to December 9th), there is a threat of another scandal.

As the IBU announced, police investigations in Austria and Italy are the basis for the provisional bans against the Kazakhs, who can now explain themselves to the association. The IBU did not provide any information about the more precise background and allegations.

The athletes in question - four men and five women primarily from the country's World Cup squad - include former junior world champion Galina Vishnevskaya and Olga Poltoranina, wife of Kazakh cross-country skiing star Alexei Poltoranin.

Corruption and doping cover-up crisis The IBU is currently dealing with its crisis surrounding corruption and doping cover-ups. Under ex-president Anders Besseberg, the world association had slipped into crisis, but recently the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted all restrictions imposed against the IBU.

The Russian biathlon association RBU in particular also fell into twilight as a result of the allegations and has only been a provisional member since December 2017. In the course of dealing with the corruption affair, the IBU had imposed strict guidelines on the Russians to regain full membership.
