Next World Cup medal: Vittozzi and Giacomel celebrate

The 28-year-old from Friuli and the youngster from the Primiero Valley were considered hot medal candidates in the run-up to the World Cup race - and they did not disappoint. At the first change, Vittozzi handed over the lead to Giacomel, who had two spares but kept Italy on course for the podium. As a result, Vittozzi also missed twice. After a strong performance on the cross-country ski trail, she sent her teammate to the last three laps in second position.

The crime thriller at the last shooting Giacomel came to the final standing stop at the same time as Norway's superstar Johannes Thingnes Bø and the Austrian surprise man David Komatz. But the 22-year-old showed nerves there. After three spare rounds and two penalties, the chance for gold and silver was gone. Since Sweden and France also made mistakes as a result, Giacomel managed to win the next medal unhindered. He was able to celebrate his second medal at the title fights in Oberhof, but for Vittozzi it was already the third medal.

At the front, Bø made everything clear on the final lap. He led himself and his teammate Marte Olsbu Røiseland to the ultimately confident world championship title. For Bø this is the fifth gold medal in the fifth World Championship race in Oberhof. Silver went to Komatz and Lisa Hauser, who were the only duo in the top six who never had to go into the penalty loop.

The biathletes can now fill their strength reserves before the last four world championship titles are awarded this weekend. The relay races continue on Saturday. With a view to the women's relay, Italy's coaches are faced with a difficult decision.
