Oberhof gets the Biathlon World Cup in 2023

This was decided by the delegates of the world association IBU at the congress in Porec, Croatia, on Sunday. The Thuringian stronghold prevailed in the election with 28 to 21 votes against its Czech competitor Nove Mesto. Oberhof, which hosted the title fights for the only time in 2004, had lost out to Antholz in its bid for the 2020 World Cup.

The organization of the World Cup in five years is on a stable foundation: the federal state wants to support the organizers of the major media event in the ski stadium at Grenzadler with investments of 15 million euros. “We will be a good host to the world!” tweeted Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (The Left). The face of the 20-person delegation in the Croatian seaside resort was four-time Olympic champion Sven Fischer.

Franz Steinle was also very happy. The President of the German Ski Association (DSV) said: “This shows the high esteem and great trust that other nations place in Oberhof and the German Ski Association. We would like to repay this leap of faith to all athletes and fans with an unforgettable World Cup in 2023!”

At the home World Championships 14 years ago, Oberhof set new standards in biathlon with a total of over 200.000 visitors in the arena and millions of viewers in front of the TV screens. “That must also be our common goal in 2023,” explained Steinle.

Lost against Antholz in the 2020 application Oberhof, which hosted the title fights for the only time in 2004, had lost out to Antholz in its bid for the 2020 World Cup. The 2021 World Cup in Porec was also awarded to Pokljuka. The Alpine plateau in Slovenia was the only applicant. The next and thus 14th IBU Congress in 2020 will take place in Prague, this decision was also made on Sunday. The last World Cup in Germany took place in Ruhpolding in 2012, when Magdalena Neuner won four medals (two gold).
