Oberhofer wins the women's first World Cup individual medal

So far, South Tyrol's biathletes have only won bronze twice, always in the relay, in 2013 in Nove Mesto and two days ago in Kontiolahti. Karin Oberhofer and Dorothea Wierer took part in both relay races, and two years ago Michela Ponza from Val Gardena was also part of the “Azzurre” quartet.

Santer and Wierer, fourth twice On Wednesday, Dorothea Wierer almost won bronze in the 15 km individual race, but in the end she was just 0,4 seconds short of the medal. The racer ultimately has to settle for fourth place.

Natahlie Santer from Toblach also took fourth place in the 1996 km individual race at the title fights in Ruhpolding in 15, 7,3 seconds behind the Ukrainian Olena Petrova. Karin Oberhofer also knows what it means to come fourth at a major event. Last year at the Sochi Winter Olympics she was 6,2 seconds short of the bronze medal in the sprint. By the way, this was won by Vita Semerenko, Valy Semerenko's twin sister, who was crowned world champion today ahead of Franziska Preuß and the South Tyrolean.

For men, the World Cup record so far looks better. Andreas Zingerle became world champion over 1993 km in 20 and Wilfried Pallhuber over 1997 km in 10. There was also relay gold in 1989 and 1993 with Pallhuber, Andreas Passler and Andreas Zingerle. There were World Championship bronze medals another five times, the last time coming from Lukas Hofer in the mass start in 2011.

Oberhofer wins the women's first World Cup individual medal

Karin Oberhofer's bronze medal at the Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti is a historic medal. The 29-year-old from Feldthurns won the first precious metal for an “Azzurra” in a women’s individual competition on Sunday.
