Östersund is history, now Antholz is taking over

The handover couldn't have been more fitting: on the last day of the World Cup, of all things Dorothea Wierer and Dominik Windisch – both from the community of Rasen-Antholz – won the gold medals. Immediately after Windisch's sensational victory The closing ceremony of the ten-day competition took place in the far north. As part of this closing ceremony, the flag of the International Biathlon Federation (IBU) was symbolically handed over by the Swedish organizers to those from Antholz. The 2020 World Cup will take place there.

A total of twelve medal decisions will take place in the Puster side valley from February 12th to 23rd. Antholz is hosting the World Cup for the sixth time after 1975, 1976, 1983, 1995 and 2007.

The South Tyroleans already provided a foretaste of next year's big event in Östersund, where the lavishly furnished “Antholz House” was a real attraction. Athletes, coaches, officials, the Italian ambassador to Sweden, South Tyrol's governor, many fans and residents of Östersund gathered together and enjoyed the South Tyrolean ambience and Italian cuisine. The highlights were not only the visits from Magdalena Forsberg, Johannes and Tarjei Bö, who stopped by with their families, but also the parties after the “Azzurri” won five medals and those of the German biathletes Denise Herrmann and Laura Dahlmeier.

We can only hope that there will be plenty of reasons to celebrate at the World Cup in the “real” Antholz next year.

Östersund is history, now Antholz is taking over

The World Championships in Östersund only ended on Sunday with two fairytale gold medals, and anticipation for the next title fights is already growing in South Tyrol. In eleven months it will be Antholz's turn.
