Olympia: Things are getting really tight for Franziska Preuß

“Franzi is not feeling quite well yet. She still has problems after the corona infection. We hope that things will improve in the next few days and that she can start training. But at the moment it’s not the case that she can think about competitions,” said women’s discipline coach Kristian Mehringer on ZDF on Friday at the World Cup in Ruhpolding. The 27-year-old Preuß injured her ankle when she fell down the stairs in France in December and also caught a corona infection at the end of the year. The overall World Cup third place last season was already missing from the home races in Oberhof and this week in Ruhpolding. Start in Antholz unlikely Next week the last World Cup before the Olympics in Beijing (February 4th to 20th) is on the program in Antholz, Italy. According to discipline coach Florian Steirer, she should begin light advanced training on Monday. “And then you have to see how it develops,” said Steirer and, with a view to the Olympics, hopes that Preuß will still be fit: “It’s very, very close. But it can take time. The question is how well the first few sessions go and how she responds to them.” The experienced Preuß, who until her bad luck was considered one of the biggest medal hopes for Beijing and who repeatedly suffered health-related setbacks in her career, has not been able to train since mid-December. That's why an operation in Antholz at the physically demanding altitude of a good 1500 meters makes no sense. “Even if it worked, you would be well advised to leave it be because the shot would probably backfire,” said Steirer, who, together with Mehringer, is in close contact with the Preuß home trainers. Their participation in the last preparatory training camp in Antholz is also not yet certain. “The altitude is always an additional stimulus for the body, and I don’t think that it needs it anymore, but rather you should just build up the whole thing calmly and see that it works,” said Steirer.
