Alexia Runggaldier probably wasn't on anyone's radar before the race. The 25-year-old from Val Gardena, who started the race with the high start number 59, kept her nerve at the shooting range in difficult wind conditions and only missed once. In addition to her, only two other athletes achieved this that day. Runggaldier let the audience carry him along in the Südtirol Arena and also offered an almost flawless performance on the cross-country ski trail. Immediately after reaching the finish line, “3” lit up on the scoreboard. Her first podium finish in the Biathlon World Cup was perfect. So far she has had a tenth place finish at the World Championships last year.

The joy about this was of course huge, which was underlined by Runggaldier's exuberant celebration after she crossed the finish line. During the subsequent TV interviews she was still speechless. "I can't believe it. What a fantastic feeling to be on the podium here of all places,” said the native of Val Gardena.

Only Laura Dahlmeier and Anais Chevalier were faster than Runggaldier on the first day of the competition in Antholz. The exceptional German athlete did not allow herself to be deterred by two errors on the shooting range and outpaced the competition with a final time of 44.48,7 minutes. With this victory, Dahlmeier also takes back the lead in the overall World Cup ranking, as her two worst opponents Gabriela Koukalova (24th) and Kaisa Mäkäräinen (15th) made mistakes. Laura Dahlmeier was on the winner's podium in the only individual competition at the start in Östersund. At that time she left Anais Bescond behind. Now she repeated this success in Antholz, where she put the next Frenchwoman in her place, Anais Chevalier. She finished almost four seconds behind.

Wierer knocked off Chevalier's compatriot Marie Dorin Habert narrowly missed the podium in fourth place, as did fifth-placed Maren Hammerschmidt. The other Italians all finished the race outside the top 30: Dorothea Wierer came 31st after six shooting errors, Federica Sanfilippo took 43rd place and Lisa Vittozzi had to settle for 84th place.

The World Cup program in Antholz continues on Friday with the men's individual competition. The race is scheduled for 14.15:XNUMX p.m.
