Podium at the season debut: Lisa Vittozzi is back

After her 2nd place in the overall World Cup in the 2018/19 season, little worked out for Vittozzi over the past three winters. The 27-year-old from Sappada/Plodn has struggled particularly with prone shooting in recent years. Now Vittozzi is back in the first competition of the new World Cup season. With just one shooting error, the Azzurra landed in third place in Kontiolahti, Finland on Wednesday.

Vittozzi made her only mistake on the first shooting. She then remained clear three times. The Swede Hanna Öberg took the victory. The 27-year-old celebrated her 7th World Cup victory and her 3rd triumph in Kontiolahti. This fact demonstrates that Öberg is always in top form at the start of the season. Despite a shooting error, the older of the two Öberg sisters beat the Norwegian Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold by 36,5 seconds.

Tandrevold – stopped in the absence of Tyril Eckhoff and Marte Olsbu Røiseland – the Norwegian flag high on the podium. Tandrevold remained flawless as one of three athletes at the shooting range in the individual competition, in which a penalty minute is added for each shooting error. In the end, the Norwegian distanced Vittozzi by a measly 3,2 seconds.

Wierer botched the start of the season Things didn't go as planned for Dorothea Wierer. The 32-year-old actually started well and was on course for a podium until the last shooting. Up to this point, Wierer had only made one mistake. However, in the last standing stage, the woman from Niederrasner left the first three targets standing. Afterwards, all chances of a top spot were gone. In the end, Wierer had to settle for 4th place with a total of 38 mistakes.

Rebecca Passler, on the other hand, showed a solid competition. The young South Tyrolean landed in 47th place with three errors. The biathletes have their next chance on Thursday.
