Premiere winner at the IBU Cup in Ridnaun

Maksim Varabei from Belarus started the sprint with the high start number 120. The 24-year-old from Borisov showed a splendid performance on skis on one of the most demanding routes in the IBU Cup and also remained flawless at the shooting range. In the end, Varabei triumphed after 10 kilometers in 26.19,3:3,7 minutes, 5,9 seconds faster than Norwegian Fredrik Gjesbakk, who is at the top of the overall IBU Cup standings. The third step on the podium had to be shared by two biathletes, as Alexander Povarnitsyn (Russia) and Haavard Gutuboe Bogetveit (Norway) - he missed once - had exactly the same time. The duo lost XNUMX seconds to Varabei. “I gave it my all on the trail and fell completely exhausted at the finish. That's why I didn't even see that I was in first place. Of course I'm very happy about this victory, no question about it. Was the high starting number an advantage? No, I think everyone had a very good situation,” said winner Maksim Varabei after the award ceremony.

The men's sprint was a close competition, with the first 17 biathletes within just a minute. And the best “Azzurro” landed in this 17th place, Thierry Chenal from Aosta, immediately ahead of Rudy Zini from Livigno. With Saverio Zini (24th) and Paolo Rodigari (40th), two more Italians ended up in the points. The only South Tyrolean participant, local hero Patrick Braunhofer from Ridnaun, finished 51st and did not get any IBU Cup points. “The shooting was good, things still need to improve significantly on the skis. Nevertheless, it was a lot better than in the last competitions,” said Braunhofer. The best biathlete from the German team was Lucas Fratzscher, who finished eighth.

Premiere victory for Skottheim

Johanna Skottheim came out on top among the women who competed over 7,5 km in the morning. The 25-year-old Swede hit all ten targets, also put on a brilliant performance on the cross-country ski trail and won in 22.26,6:XNUMX minutes. For Skottheim it was the first individual victory in the IBU Cup. “This win means a lot to me. I was still sick on Tuesday and didn't arrive until Thursday. That's why I didn't know what to expect. In any case, I'm overjoyed. We have a very strong team. That’s definitely an advantage because we can push each other in this way,” said Skottheim at the finish.

At the award ceremony, the Swede was flanked by two Russian biathletes. Irina Starykh and Anastasiia Porshneva took second and third positions. This duo also made no mistakes at the shooting range. Starykh also took the lead in the overall standings of the IBU Cup with second place. Maren Hammerschmidt took fifth place as the best German participant. A penalty lap after the standing stop cost the 30-year-old a possible podium.

Lardschneider made no mistakes in 16th place

From the perspective of the Italian national team, South Tyrolean Irene Lardschneider achieved the best result. The 21-year-old from Val Gardena made no mistakes at the shooting range, but lost 1.16 minutes behind Skottheim on the cross-country ski trail. “The shape clearly points upwards. I'm not a great runner yet, but that's normal. “I’m an athlete who needs a few competitions to get things going,” explained Lardschneider. The second Val Gardena woman in the team – Alexia Runggaldier – had to settle for 42nd place after three penalties. In between, Michela Carrara placed 26th, while Eleonora Fauner came 70th.
