Shooting miracle wins gold - Hofer's risk remains unrewarded

The old and new world champion in the pursuit is called Emilien Jacquelin. The Frenchman delivered a brilliant performance on the Pokljuka on Sunday afternoon and thus defended his title from the previous year, which he had won in Antholz. His performance in the two standing stages was particularly impressive: not only did he clear all 10 targets, but he only needed 17 seconds per shooting range stop - an incredible performance. Because he hadn't made any mistakes while lying down, the victory couldn't be taken away from him.

Even before the competition, Jacquelin was one of the big favorites for the title. On the one hand, because his bronze medal in the sprint put him in an ideal starting position for the pursuit. Behind Jacquelin, a duel for the silver medal broke out on the final lap. Johannes Thingnes Bø was on course for second place for a long time, but in the last few meters the Swede Sebastian Samuelsson snatched the silver metal away from him. The penalty laps were probably the decisive factor for this: While Bø had to do a total of two extra laps, Samuelsson got through without a mistake and still had a few grains left in the finish. After all: Bø won the first men's medal for Norway at this World Cup. Hofer runs like he's on rails, but doesn't score Lukas Hofer started the pursuit - based on the sprint result - from position 50, around 13 seconds behind. That's why the Montaler immediately took full risks in the first shooting (prone), but it didn't pay off. Hofer missed three times and had to do as many extra laps. Two penalties were added at the three further shooting range stops. But he didn't fall far behind: In the end, the Pusterer finished in 15th place, which is primarily due to his outstanding running performance.

Hofer's teammate Thomas Bormolini showed a strong race, moving up from 27th place to 19th place. Dominik Windisch, on the other hand, had major problems at the shooting range: a total of seven errors ensured that he ended up in 36th place. Youngster Didier Bionaz experienced a completely messed up race: The 20-year-old, who had finished 21st in the sprint, missed a total of 13 of 20 targets and is in 58th and third-to-last place in the final rankings.
