“Strange feeling during training”: top biathlete is pregnant

The Russian top biathlete Ekaterina Yurlova-Percht is becoming a mother for the second time and will therefore miss the entire season. “Sometimes life has incredibly sweet surprises,” writes the 35-year-old on her social channels. “I was preparing for the new season when suddenly my plans were completely thrown off course. During a training session I suddenly had strange feelings, so I immediately went to the doctor. In the evening I got the news that I was going to be a mother for the second time.”

Despite her 35 years, Yurlova-Percht is one of the top athletes on the Russian team. Last winter she showed, especially at the World Championships in Antholz, that she is far from being a thing of the past. In the mass start she took a strong sixth place. In general, the Russian's biathlon stronghold is in South Tyrol: she celebrated one of her two World Cup victories there in 2016. In 2015 she was crowned world champion in Kontiolahti, and in 2019 she won World Championship silver in the Östersund mass start.

Yurlova-Percht doesn't yet know what will happen next with her career. “I will skip the coming season. And then we'll look further. Right now I'm just happy and want to focus on my health, my family's health and our future baby. But I definitely won’t say goodbye to biathlon.”
