Shipulin leads Russia to the final victory

The relay race was literally a new edition of the pursuit, which also ended in an exciting finish between Anton Shipulin and Simon Schempp. And once again the Russian was in the lead in the end. In a heart-stopping finale, he held off the sprint winner from Germany and secured his team with Maxim Tsvetkov, Evgeniy Garanichev and Dmitry Malyshko their second relay win of the season. Schempp crossed the finish line one second behind. The Germans had three fewer misses than the Russians, but had to go into the penalty loop once.

The shooting range also proved fatal for the Norwegians. They were in the lead until the seventh shooting stage, but then Erlend Bjøntegaard had to let the competition go and ultimately settle for third place.

The Azzurri's race takes a dramatic turn

The race had a bitter end for the Italian selection, which initially fought its way to the top with Christian De Lorenzi and the brilliant Lukas Hofer and was in first place before the third change. Giuseppe Montello, however, could not withstand the pressure in his relay debut in the World Cup and had to go into the penalty loop four times in the first shooting. The chance of a top spot was therefore gone. Dominik Windisch ultimately finished the race in 16th place.

Anton Shipulin (RUS): “These are incredible duels that I'm having with Simon (Schempp, editor's note) at the moment. Normally Schempp is perhaps a little better at finishing, but this time I had greater reserves of strength and was able to keep him in check. I just didn’t want to give him a chance.”

Arnd Peiffer (GER): “Simon did a perfect job, it wasn’t his fault today that we weren’t at the top of the winner’s podium. Russia was simply better. That's why we can definitely count this second place as a success. This result will give us a lot of momentum in the next few weeks.”

Johannes Thingses Bø (NOR): “With Emil Hegle Svendsen and Tarjei Bø we were missing perhaps the best relay runners on our team today. I think in the end we made the best of this situation and achieved a decent result with third place.”

Shipulin leads Russia to the final victory

This year's World Cup stage in Antholz was all about the Russian biathletes: the men's relay team led by Anton Shipulin took Russia's fourth victory within four days. She prevailed in a thrilling final against Germany and thus ensured a worthy conclusion in front of almost 20.000 spectators.
