Victory in Östersund: A North Tyrolean takes on the yellow jersey

Hauser won her first World Cup victory in the sprint in light snow and freezing cold in Östersund. The mass start world champion once again proved that her strong preseason was no coincidence. The Austrian was second on the podium in the individual last weekend. With her sprint victory on Thursday, she also took over the yellow jersey and thus the lead in the overall World Cup.

Hauser laid the foundation for victory at the shooting range. The North Tyrolean from Reith near Kitzbühel cleared all 10 targets and came out ahead of Elvira Öberg by 12,2 seconds. The performance of the young Swede is particularly noteworthy. Despite two mistakes, Hanna Öberg's young sister ended up in second place. She was in a class of her own, especially on the final lap. Hanna Sola from Belarus took third place. She pushed her teammate Dzinara Alimbekava to fourth place. Vittozzi and Wierer make mistakes when shooting prone Best Azzurra was Lisa Vittozzi in 13th place. Like Dorothea Wierer, she performed flawlessly in the standing shooting. When shooting prone, however, things were different. While Vittozzi made a mistake, the Niederrasner woman had to go into the penalty loop twice. This meant that a top ranking was no longer possible. With 16th place, Wierer at least limited the damage - also because she was in good running form.

It's not just Wierer who isn't in top form at the start of the season. The overall World Cup winner Tiril Eckhoff is also currently struggling. On Thursday, the Norwegian only finished in 32nd place. Hannah Auchentaller from Antholz made a decent World Cup debut. The 20-year-old finished in 81st place.

At the Biathlon World Cup in Östersund, the men's sprint continues immediately afterwards (16.30 p.m.). The women's pursuit continues on Saturday (13 p.m.).
