This is how training goes for the biathlon stars of tomorrow

They shoot and shoot and shoot. South Tyrol's state coaches started working with the young biathletes where the shoe was most pressing recently. The first training session involved a lot of shooting. The 2020/21 state biathlon squad is broadly based: 16 young athletes are under the care of the trainers, running, honing their technique and practicing the exact sequences at the shooting range.

Christian Braunhofer, Ralf Passler, Michael Eberhöfer and the newly arrived Armin Kasslatter (“A magician when it comes to roller skis,” says Braunhofer) have summoned their protégés to Antholz for their first joint rendezvous. A hotelier is sponsoring the training camp There they also found a benevolent sponsor, as Karl Sonnerer from the Hotel Brötz wants to provide the state squad with two training sessions free of charge. “We have to save money all around, offers like this come like manna from heaven,” says the dedicated coaching staff.

The location of the first training is also significant: Especially there, where Dorothea Wierer won two gold medals at the World Championships in February, it is something very special to be able to train. Even more so when Doro and other members of the national team are doing their private training exercises next door.

The girls and bushes don't lack motivation. There is Lisa Stoll, who joined late, as well as last year's national champion Veronika Rainer, there is Christoph Pircher, who comes from Überetsch and has discovered his passion for biathlon, as well as Giovanni Riccadonna from the Trient Judicaria, but in Mals goes to school and starts for Antholz. Small life stories that show the enthusiasm for the combined sport.

The training plan for the summer has been decided. In addition to the regular group training, there is also a lot of homework, which all 16 biathletes diligently follow. When and how things will start in winter is another matter. “But we want to be ready when it comes to shooting results and split seconds for the first time,” is the basic tenor. Because perhaps one of the athletes now on the national team will one day win World Cup gold...
