Relay win! Wierer, Oberhofer and Co. triumph in Hochfilzen

The incredible success of the South Tyrolean biathletes also continued in the second World Cup stage in North Tyrol. With an extremely strong performance on the cross-country ski trail and a furious finale, they left the entire competition behind in the 4x6 km relay.

Already at the start of the race it became clear that the “Azzurre” would be at the forefront in Hochfilzen. Lisa Vittozzi, supposedly the most error-prone athlete in the Italian quartet, showed no weakness and handed over to Karin Oberhofer in fifth place after a flawless shooting performance. Although the woman from Feldthurn had to reload once in the standing stage, she still made up position after position and fought her way up to second place before the second changeover. Afterwards, Federica Sanfilippo was able to leave the leading Czech woman behind, but the Ridnaun Valley native lost valuable time with five errors at the shooting range. She still managed to maintain contact with the top spots before the last change.

Wierer wins in the heart-stopping final

So it was once again up to Dorothea Wierer to catapult Italy forward with a final show of strength. And the 25-year-old from Rasen should be able to do that in her inimitable style. She advanced to second place and drew level with Franziska Preuß before the last shooting. Both opponents missed the target once each. So they literally went to the last section at the same time. There, Wierer countered an attack by the Germans and literally pushed her ski past her rival with the last step. The historic first victory of an Italian women's relay team was perfect. In the end, Wierer and Preuß were only separated by 0,2 seconds. The Ukrainian Valj Semerenko crossed the finish line in third place, a long way behind.

This is the fourth podium finish for the local biathlon aces in the still young World Cup season. Wierer had already achieved a win and a second place at the start in Östersund. Federica Sanfilippo was also on the podium for the first time in Scandinavia as second place.
