The biathlon world is discussing this finish sprint

The starting situation around the small crystal ball promised to be very exciting even before the race on Sunday. Dorothea Wierer was three points ahead of Elivra Öberg and 21 points ahead of Justine Braisaz-Bouchet in the mass start World Cup. After the last shooting, the situation came to a head. Because Wierer fell back to 12th place on the final lap, Braisaz-Bouchet and Öberg divided the ball between themselves. Braisaz-Bouchet had the better end for herself - also because one of Öberg's teammate played into the Frenchwoman's hands. Linn Persson intercepted the younger of the two Öberg sisters on the home straight and pushed her back from 4th to 5th place. So the 23-year-old missed the small crystal ball by a measly 2 points. If Persson had stayed behind her, Öberg would have been one point ahead at the end. From Öberg's point of view, her own teammate was, so to speak, the big spoilsport. Particularly bitter: Because of a lunge, Persson, who actually didn't have much at stake, ended up a tenth faster at the finish. Teammate takes the ball away from Öberg After the race, this caused a lot of discussion in the biathlon community and especially in the Swedish camp. At first Öberg left the finish area sadly and without a word. A little later she took a stand: “Linn is not to blame. It's sport - and it's not about life and death," explained a disappointed Öberg, who refrained from public criticism. The finish sprint between Persson and Öberg (from 2.40 in the video): Persson, however, had to defend himself after the race. The 27-year-old admitted that she was of course aware that her teammate was fighting for the ball. However, according to her own statement, she did not know exactly what space Öberg would need. The mistake apparently lay with the Swedish team itself, which perhaps should have given clearer instructions on the final lap. But the trainers probably lost track of all the calculations in such a short amount of time.
