Outstanding: Dorothea Wierer wins in Ruhpolding!

Exactly 48 days before the start of the Biathlon World Championships in Oslo, Dorothea Wierer catapulted herself into the very narrow circle of potential gold medal winners with an irresistible performance. The racer outclassed the competition in the individual race in Ruhpolding and further extended her lead in the discipline rankings.

“I wasn’t thinking.”

Wierer once again fired her shots every second and hit the target every twenty attempts. She was the only one of the candidates for victory without a single shooting error. But the South Tyrolean didn't just make a big impression with the rifle at the ready, but also on the cross-country ski trail, where she fought a long-distance duel with the Norwegian Tyrill Eckhoff before she made three mistakes in the last shooting and thus gave her rival the chance to win Victory paved the way. Her second success and fourth podium finish this winter were perfect a short time later. Wierer crossed the finish line after 40:19,9 minutes and was 54,8 seconds faster than the experienced Finn Kaisa Mäkäräinen, who took second place. Gabriela Soukalova from the Czech Republic came third.

Wierer was overwhelmed after the race victory: “I was actually expecting to have to give up the leader’s jersey in the individual classification today. After my illness I just didn't feel good. I never thought it would go so well." The Azzurra cites her flawless shooting performance as the basis of her success: "It couldn't have gone better. I just turned my head off, didn't think for a second and shot as quickly as I could. That’s my recipe for success at the moment.”

Sanfilippo also in the top ten

In Ruhpolding on Thursday, however, not only Wierer was able to convince, but also Federica Sanfilippo from Ridnaun Valley, who recorded her third-best World Cup result ever with eighth place. She only missed once in the final shooting and finally crossed the finish line 1:41,2 minutes behind her victorious teammate.

Meanwhile, the race didn't go as planned for Karin Oberhofer, who finished 48th and clearly missed out on a top-30 finish. The young woman from Val Gardena, Alexia Runggaldier, did better. She knew how to impress at the shooting range and ended up in 35th place.

The program for the fifth World Cup stage in the Bavarian Alps continues on Friday with the men's relay race.
