What a biathlon Sunday, what a World Cup finish! Just two hours later Dorothea Wierer won the women's mass start title Dominik Windisch also struck – and it was completely sensational. The 29-year-old from Rasen took advantage of a festival of mistakes in the last shooting, passed all the competition and sprinted to his first world championship title. First things first: In deep winter conditions in the last World Cup race in Östersund, everything pointed to a duel between World Cup dominator Johannes Thingnes Bø and Evgeniy Garanichev. On the last lap he didn't let the butter take away from his bread and ran unhindered towards his unimagined triumph. Windisch won by more than twenty seconds over Guigonnat and Eberhard. Windisch and Wierer cause déjà vu A curious detail: This is the second time that Wierer and Windisch, who come from Rasen, have won a mass start race on the same day. Three years ago both celebrated – also in difficult conditions – at the World Cup in Canmore.

On this historic Sunday in the far north, Windisch secured the eighth South Tyrolean world championship title, the fourth in an individual race. Before him and Wierer, Andreas Zingerle (individual, 1993) and Wilfried Pallhuber (sprint, 1997) won the gold medal.
