Vittozzi triumphs – Wierer makes a mistake at the shooting range

Dorothea Wierer failed to claim her triumph yesterday to be repeated at the Summer World Championships in Ruhpolding. The woman from Niederrasner ended up in seventh place. And yet there was reason to celebrate at the Azzurre. Lisa Vittozzi, who was second behind Wierer the day before, ran a 6,5 kilometer sprint to the top on Saturday.

And things didn't go as planned for the Italian at the beginning. Vittozzi made a mistake in the first shooting and ran through the first split in 16th place. But spurred on by the early mistake, the 27-year-old ran as if possessed by the devil. She remained flawless over the remaining distance and was already in second place after the second split - eleven seconds behind the leader Marketa Davidova. Vittozzi (2:16.21,40 minutes) gave his all in the final section and relegated the Czech Republic to second place with a lead of 2,40 seconds.

After winning the gold medal on Friday, Dorothea Wierer went into the race as the top favorite. But the first time she shot while lying down she met the same fate as Vittozzi and missed. Unlike the winner, the South Tyrolean couldn't recover and didn't hit a target even while standing. In the end she ended up in seventh place (+43,40 seconds).

Paulína Fialková from Slovakia took bronze, at the same time as the Swiss Lena Häcki (+23,90 seconds). In addition to Wierer, other favorites were also not at their best. Elvira Öberg, for example, came in 5th place and was over 15 seconds short of a medal. Samuelsson wins among men A similar picture emerged for men. Yesterday's second place was at the top today. Sebastian Samuelsson (18.38,10 minutes) from Sweden celebrated his gold medal after 7,5 kilometers.
