World-class Wierer is abandoned by her partner

The World Team Challenge in Gelsenkirchen is everything but a normal biathlon race. The race takes place in a football stadium, namely in the arena of Bundesliga club Schalke 04. A total of ten duos, each consisting of one female biathlete and one male biathlete from the same nation, took part. The ski hunters took turns after each round. First there was a mass start, then a pursuit. This year the World Team Challenge returned to Gelsenkirchen after the last two editions had to be held in the Chiemgau Arena in Ruhpolding due to corona. Dorothea Wierer is a regular at this event, but there was a change for her too: Instead of the injured Lukas Hofer, the young Tommaso Giacomel was her partner. However, the Trentino biathlete was overwhelmed on his debut in the packed Schalke Arena and made a number of mistakes. This meant that a top ranking was quickly eliminated, and in the end the duo ended up in 9th and penultimate place. Wierer shines, Giacomel fails It's a shame for Dorothea Wierer, who performed at a world-class level on Wednesday. In the first part, the mass start, she hit 19 of 20 targets, while Giacomel had to go into the 75 meter long penalty loop ten times. This put the Azzurri in last place. In the pursuit, Wierer once again showed a top performance and shone with impeccable series, but Giacomel was also prone to errors and ended up in 9th place. Meanwhile, victory went to the two Frenchmen Julia Simon and Fabien Claude, who stole the half-time lead from the Norwegian duo Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold and Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen and triumphed in front of an impressive backdrop. Above all, the overall World Cup leader Julia Simon was in a class of her own. Third place went to the Austrian team Lisa Hauser/Felix Leitner, while the highly rated German duo Denise Herrmann-Wick/Benedikt Doll came in fourth place.

For many biathlon stars it is always a special end to the calendar year: the World Team Challenge on Schalke. Dorothea Wierer also took part in this show competition on Wednesday evening, but her world-class performance was, so to speak, a waste.
