When a biathlon couple says goodbye together

The news of his resignation came out of nowhere: in May, the Italian Thomas Bormolini announced - after by far the most successful season of his career - that he I've had enough of biathlon. “I want to do something different in the future,” the 30-year-old explained, making the same decision as his Czech partner Eva Puskarcíková just a few months earlier. Now the retired biathlon couple, who have been in a relationship for around a year and a half, have been interviewed by the world association IBU. There were many interesting details revealed.

Accordingly, the 31-year-old, in contrast to her partner, made the continuation of her career dependent on her performance. “If I had always fought for a top 10 place with clean shooting, I would have continued. But it was time to say stop and do new things, take on new challenges,” says Puskarcíková, who says she had no influence on the end of her partner’s career. “He realized that retirement is not the end of life. Yes, something is coming to an end, but at the same time it is also the beginning of something new.” No big plans made And what happens to life after your career? “Unfortunately, I did not study during my active career, which is very common in Italy - given that I belong to a sports group,” regrets Bormolini, who is now starting to study and taking “a first step” for his future as a ski instructor and trainer wool. At some point the Italian could also imagine a position within the IBU. Puskarcíková, however, wants to enjoy her time as a biathlon retiree. “Trying new things, traveling a lot and experiencing the world in places we haven't been before is educational. After the season we went to Mauritius and took a trip to the Balkans by car. We also want to visit Corsica after the summer. And a trip to Vietnam is also planned.”

It is not clear whether the Czech will remain involved in her sport in any form. “We will see where fate takes us,” says Puskarcíková. “I definitely still meet with all my biathlon colleagues and now, after a break from the sport and a change of heart, we would probably like to stay somewhere close to biathlon.” Bormolini, on the other hand, already has clearer plans. “I am very proud to be an IBU Ambassador for Equality. This is something that motivates me a lot. The IBU does a lot for post-career life, including camps and seminars. So I often find out about the availability of such courses. It would be great to be part of the development of our sport and the support for the athletes during and after their time in racing,” concludes the Italian.
