Wierer & Co. in Östersund Gone with the Wind

Almost exactly a year ago to the day, Dorothea Wierer celebrated a sensational victory in the individual competition. On Wednesday, the performance of last year's overall World Cup third place went completely wrong. Wierer started the race strong as usual, safely brought down the first five targets in prone shooting under normal wind conditions and had the best split time in the field until the second stop at the shooting range. But then Wierer, like numerous other top athletes, had to pay tribute to the gusts of wind and missed the target seven times in the three remaining shooting attempts. For the otherwise very safe shooter from Niederrasen, that was quite a feat, earning her seven penalty minutes and finishing 31st.

Dahlmeier wins The German Laura Dahlmeier, on the other hand, was unfazed by the strong wind and ran a strong race, only missing twice and taking her seventh World Cup victory with a time of 46.14 minutes. With only 15,8 seconds behind Dahlmeier and one shooting error, the Frenchwoman Anais Biscond crossed the finish line, while third place surprisingly went to the Belarusian Darja Jurkewitsch, who was the only athlete in the field who did not make a single miss.

However, there were no World Cup points for the other South Tyrolean women: Alexia Runggaldier missed five times and came 49th, Federica Sanfilippo made eight misses and ended up in 50th place, while Karin Oberhofer couldn't get past 51st place with five mistakes.

On Thursday, starting at 18 p.m., the men will be in action in the individual competition. Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch also want to cause a stir.

The wind lottery in Östersund brought no luck for the local biathletes: In the first individual competition of the season, Dorothea Wierer & Co. experienced a race to forget in difficult conditions and placed beyond the top ranks. Laura Dahlmeier won.
