Wierer fights, but in the end a German celebrates

The athletes enjoyed the best external conditions in the Pillerseetal: the sun was shining, the temperatures were around freezing point and the cross-country ski trail was compact. Because the wind didn't play a big role, one could assume that the shooting was good. But this was not so. A surprising number of stars missed the mark – just not Denise Herrmann-Wick. The German was the only favorite to clear all the targets and won in a dominant manner. She prevailed by 21 seconds over Marketa Davidova (Czech Republic) and Julia Simon from France, who both shot one penalty each.

In the meantime, Herrmann-Wick still had to worry about her victory - namely when the former cross-country skier Anamarija Lampic shot the zero while lying down and made people sit up and take notice with a sensational running time. But three mistakes in the standing position ruined all chances of victory. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old Slovenian achieved a sensational fifth place on her World Cup debut.

Wierer in high Meanwhile, Dorothea Wierer showed a strong race. She once again shot cleanly in the prone stage (she hasn't made a single prone error this season), but had to go into the round once after a rapid-fire performance in the standing position. The woman from Niederrasner, who was still ailing last week, lost some time on the final lap and finally came in a good seventh place. This gave her an excellent starting position for the pursuit on Saturday.

The sister duo Hanna and Elvira Öberg also failed to fold down all the windows. With two errors each, the two Swedes were unable to fight for victory. Elvira came fourth, Hanna sixth. Lisa Vittozzi, the yellow jersey wearer, also had to make two penalty laps due to two missed prone shots. She only finished 18th in the final rankings and lost the overall lead to Simon. Rebecca Passler finished 33rd and collected World Cup points for the third time in a row.

Dorothea Wierer confirmed her strong early form in the sprint in Hochfilzen (Austria) on Thursday - even if it wasn't enough for a podium in the end. Denise Herrmann-Wick took the win, but another lady put on the big show.
