Wierer: “A big burden falls off my shoulders”

After 2 overall World Cups, a total of 10 medals, including 3 gold ones, at the World Championships, and 2 Olympic bronze medals in the mixed relay, she has finally done it: she won an individual medal at the Olympics. After Wierer's otherwise outstanding career, the pressure before the games in Beijing was there. “Expectations were very high and everyone expected individual medals. But everyone knows that biathlon is a complicated sport and everything has to go perfectly. It’s not always easy to deal with the pressure.”

Wierer selflessly praised not herself, but also her entire team: “There has been a lot of criticism recently, so I am glad that we as a team managed to achieve our goal. Everyone, trainers, service staff and technical director, work hard every day for my success, and I’m happy for them too.”

Wierer owes her triumph primarily to her strong shooting performance. The South Tyrolean hit every single target and shot at the target every second. Wierer delivered one of the best shooting performances of these games and didn't even know anything about it: “I don't remember shooting at all. The last shot in prone shooting probably only just hit the target, which then fortunately closed. Apparently luck was on my side today.
