Wierer wins next prize

Wierer was named Athlete of the Year 2019 by the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) in Modena. The 29-year-old received the most votes from fans who voted on the website fisi.org last month. She thus inherits Sofia Goggia, who won in the last two years.

This is a special triumph for Wierer, as it is the first time a biathlete has been named winter athlete of the year. The last South Tyrolean tobogganer Armin Zöggeler received this prize in 2014.

"I am very happy. But above all, grateful because so many fans voted for me. It won't be easy to repeat last season's successes. But I am very motivated, also because the home World Cup in Antholz is just around the corner,” Wierer was quoted as saying by the Italian winter sports association.

In addition to winning the overall World Cup, Wierer also won a gold medal (in the mass start) at the World Cup in Östersund last season. She also grabbed the small crystal ball for winning the individual World Cup.

Paris also honored In addition to Wierer, ski ace Dominik Paris also received a prize. The Ultner was honored for the “brilliant performance of the year”. Paris celebrated its victories mostly on the most spectacular routes (Bormio, Kitzbühel or Kvitfjell). In addition, Paris celebrated its dream season with a world championship title and winning a crystal ball (both in Super-G).
