Wierer and Oberhofer also did well in the “Race of Champions” in Tyumen

The “Race of Champions”, which was launched in 2011 and has always been held in Moscow, took place for the fifth time last weekend. The venue for the competitions this year was not Moscow but Tyumen, which is home to one of the best biathlon stadiums in the world, namely “The Pearl of Siberia”. The world's best biathletes come together every year at the show race in Russia; this year, Dorothea Wierer and Karin Oberhofer were also invited for the first time.

On Saturday there was a so-called mega mass start as the “Governor's Prize of the Tyumen Region”, during which the athletes covered a total of 15 km and had to go to the shooting range eight times. Victory was secured by Belarusian Darya Domracheva, who crossed the finish line 24 seconds ahead of Russian Darya Virolainen. Domracheva made a total of three shooting errors, while Virolainen made four. Third place went to the Finn Kaisa Mäkäräinen, who missed the target six times at the shooting range. The two “Azzurre” Karin Oberhofer and Dorothea Wierer were also involved in the fight for the podium places for a long time. However, they made a total of three errors in each of the last two shooting sessions and ultimately finished the race in sixth and seventh place. Oberhofer finished the mega mass start with a total of six errors, 2.94 minutes behind Domracheva, Wierer was 2:27.7 minutes slower than the winner with nine errors at the finish.

Oberhofer on the podium in the mass start Domracheva also triumphed in the second mass start competition on Sunday. There she won by five seconds over her compatriot Nadzhda Scardino, who made the Belarusian double success perfect. Karin Oberhofer from Feldthurn finished the race on Sunday in an excellent third place (+0.06 seconds/2 errors). The racer Dorothea Wierer, on the other hand, ended up in sixth place (+0.31/4 errors), but at least had the best performance in the shooting competition that preceded the race to determine the starting order.

In the final single mixed relay, Oberhofer took fifth place together with the Russian Evgeniy Garanichev, while Dorothea Wierer came seventh with the Swede Fredrik Lindström. The Russian duo Ekaterina Yurlova/Anton Shipulin secured victory.
