Wierer irresistible: from 17th place to the podium!

Zero mistakes at the shooting range, shots at hellish speed and an irresistible start on the cross-country ski trail – Dorothea Wierer conjured up everything in the Finnish snow on Sunday afternoon that has made her one of the best biathletes in the world for almost a decade. This pushed her into second place in the pursuit competition.

Wierer was after the sprint race entered the cross-country ski trail in 17th place and already knew that it would take a truly gala performance to get back into the front of the field. The soon to be 32-year-old speedster also made this gala appearance. Of all 60 starters, she recorded the best race time, remained clean at the shooting range four times and thus gained position after position. At the last standing stage she catapulted herself into second place and defended this position on the final lap against sprint winner Denise Herrmann from Germany. Eckhoff confidently The victory went to Tiril Eckhoff, who was 15,9 seconds faster than Wierer after two penalties. For the Norwegian, it is a clear respectable success towards the end of a mixed season for her.

Wierer, on the other hand, celebrated her fourth individual podium finish this winter, including winning the bronze medal in the Olympic sprint. The last time the Puster native made it into the top three in the pursuit competition was two years ago.

In addition to Wierer, Federica Sanfilippo from Ridnaun was also able to gain several places in the pursuit. However, she started the race clearly handicapped in 58th place. She ended up in 41st place (2 errors). The young Samuela Comola from the Aosta Valley fell back to 7th place after 57 penalties.

The biathletes are now moving to Estonia, where the penultimate World Cup stage will take place next week. The result:
