World Cup in Antholz: What about the money?

A total of 1,26 million euros in prize money will be distributed in Antholz. It is paid out by the world association IBU, which sets biathlon apart from other sports such as skiing. The organizers have to pay for the prize money themselves.

But how much do the athletes collect? If they win, the new world champion will receive 25.000 euros, the second place 19.000 and the third 14.000 - all gross, of course. Prize money will be paid out up to 20th place, with this placement being rewarded with 650 euros.

Different guidelines apply to the relay competitions: Here the winning quartet receives 28.000 euros, which is why each individual receives 7.000 euros. For second place there is 2 euros (i.e. 22.000 euros per nose), for third place 5.500 euros (18.000 euros per nose).

Other gadgets are also waiting A world championship differs – logically – from a world cup. A win there is rewarded with 15.000 euros. In total, the association pays out 6,6 million euros in prize money in a season with the World Cup, World Cups, Nations Cup, bonuses for overall placement and winning the crystal balls.

Back to the World Cup: The medal winners in Antholz can not only look forward to prize money, but also receive other recognition such as a wooden trophy and gadgets such as backpacks or power banks. Each world champion also benefits from a shopping voucher worth 500 euros from Luis Trenker. Top earners are others Last year, Dorothea Wierer collected around 240.000 euros in prize money as overall World Cup winner and mass start world champion. Of course, there is also other income such as sponsorship money or the salary of her financial guard sports group. In the men's category, the dominator Johannes Thingnes Bø was able to look forward to 462.500 euros.

The biathletes cannot keep up with the top earners among skiers. For example, Mikaela Shiffrin collected 880.000 euros in prize money last year, while Dominik Paris received almost 400.000 euros. Skiers usually receive 42.300 euros for a World Cup victory, and in Kitzbühel this year they even received 100.000 euros.

From a South Tyrolean perspective, top earners in terms of prize money were neither to be found in biathlon nor in the alpine skiing circus: tennis ace Andreas Seppi collected 730.000 euros in prize money last year, shooting star Jannik Sinner also received the handsome sum of just under in just one year 700.000 euros collected.
