There's nothing to be gained at the end of the World Cup

In a truly heart-stopping finale, Hanna Öberg won her second world championship title and her fourth medal overall in the mass start race over 12,5 kilometers in Oberhof.

The Swede, who had previously only won a single World Cup race this season, sprinted forward as if unleashed after making one mistake in each of the first two shooting sessions and in the end not only overtook the French women Julia Simon and Anais Chevalier-Bouchet, who had been leading for a long time, but also The Norwegian Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold also left standing on the final lap. The latter won her first individual medal in Oberhof with silver, while Simon struggled across the finish line in third place, completely exhausted.

In Italy's team it was - just 24 hours after outstanding gold medal win in the relay – not the hyped-up Lisa Vittozzi or Dorothea Wierer, who stood out, but Samuela Comola. The 24-year-old from the Aosta Valley, who had already achieved a sensational fourth place in the individual, achieved tenth place, the best Italian result on the last day of the World Cup.

Wierer remains without an individual medal For a long time, Wierer was clearly ahead of her. She went into the second round in second place, but made one mistake in each of the following two shooting sessions. Exhausted by the two penalty laps and with a lot of effort on the snow that had been softened by the constant rain, the 32-year-old racer finally dragged herself to the finish in 14th place.

Wierer did even better than three-time World Cup medalist Lisa Vittozzi, who had to settle for 22nd place after a whopping five shooting errors. The young Antholzer Hannah Auchentaller, who was allowed to take part at the start at the last minute, took 29th place after six errors at the shooting range.

Positive World Cup balance Despite the lackluster final day, head coach Alex Inderst and biathlon director Klaus Höllrigl can draw an extremely positive World Cup balance. Italy leaves Oberhof with four medals. For comparison: the Azzurri came away completely empty-handed in the 2021 title fights in Pokljuka.

There's nothing to be gained at the end of the World Cup

The World Championships in Oberhof officially ended on Sunday afternoon. At the end, the approximately 25.000 spectators in the Thuringian Forest were treated to another top-class biathlon spectacle, although the Azzurre came away empty-handed.
