Second! Now things have worked out for Dorothea Wierer in Antholz

The first winner at the World Cup days in Antholz comes from Russia: outsider Olga Podchufarova thwarted the big favorites and celebrated her first ever World Cup success. The 23-year-old showed no nerves at the shooting range, kept a consistently high pace on the trail and finally crossed the finish line after 21:01,9 minutes. Her second podium finish, after third place in Pokljuka in December, was perfect.

The “Stockerl” is no longer new territory for Dorothea Wierer. However, the Niederrasner woman made it onto the podium for the first time at her home race in Antholz. Accordingly, when they reached the finish line, there was exuberant cheering in the spectator stands of the Südtirol Arena. She was only eight seconds behind Podchufarova - even though she made a mistake in the second shooting. If she had succeeded in that attempt, the victory probably wouldn't have been taken away from her. But even so, there was plenty of reason for Wierer to celebrate, as she recorded her best sprint placement and at the same time her seventh podium finish of the season.

Behind Wierer, another Russian, Ekaterina Yurlova, made it onto the podium. She remained just as flawless at the shooting range as her victorious teammate.

Oberhofer with the best result of the season

From a local perspective, there was another success report: Karin Oberhofer offered an unleashed performance in front of her fans at times. Only one missed shot threw her off track a bit and ultimately caused her to slip to seventh place. But this was still their best result of the current season.

The other two Azzurre were further back in the rankings. Lisa Vittozzi took 30th place, while Federica Sanfilippo from Ridnaun Valley did not get higher than 71st place. She will not be at the start of the pursuit on Saturday.

The Biathlon World Cup in South Tyrol started with two bangs on Thursday. On the one hand, Olga Podchufarova, an athlete who has never been on the podium before, won. On the other hand, Dorothea Wierer caused cheers in the stands when she came second in her home race.
