Second gold for Juliane Döll, third medal for South Tyrol

Even before the European Championships, many experts were betting on Juliane Döll. In Ridnaun, the German lived up to her role as favorite and won the 7.5 km sprint in 23:15.7 minutes. Döll celebrated her sixth European Championship medal today, having already climbed onto the podium in Ufa in 2009 (two medals) and in Otepää (one medal) last year.

Silver went to Gabriela Soukalova. It wasn't the Czech's first international success either: two years ago she won gold in the relay at the Junior World Championships. The Frenchwoman Marine Bolliet, who was the only top runner to remain clean at the shooting range, took third place ahead of Karin Oberhofer. The 25-year-old from Feldthurns missed bronze by 23 seconds.

Silver for Dorothea Wierer among the juniors As with the boys of the same age, the gold medal for the junior women went to Russia. Alexandra Alikina prevailed by just three seconds over Dorothea Wierer from Rasen, who won her second silver medal in Ridnaun. On Thursday she came second with the Italian senior relay team. The chances of getting back on the podium in the pursuit race tomorrow are great. “Unfortunately, I made one mistake too many at the shooting range,” complains the 20-year-old. “Gold was certainly within reach today. But I have to forget today’s race immediately and concentrate on tomorrow.” The Russian Olga Galich won bronze in the sprint. After gold in the individual race and in the mixed relay, she came third today. Alexia Runggalider from Val Gardena ran excellently and crossed the finish line in fifth place.

Tomorrow, Sunday, the European Championships in Ridnaun will end with the pursuit races.

Marine Bolliet, third: "I fought. My performance at the shooting range was excellent, but not on the cross-country ski trail. I'll have to step up my game there tomorrow. I hope that I have faster skis tomorrow so that I can maintain my position or move further forward.”
