Doping offender Zubkov remains president of the Russian Bobsleigh Federation

As the industry service “insidethegames” reports, the 43-year-old was elected unopposed in Sochi for a second term in office on Tuesday. His two rivals had previously withdrawn their candidacies in protest against supposedly “illegal” election conditions.

Zubkov speaks of the anti-doping fight “We work for ambitious goals, want to get young people more interested in sport, and one of our most important concerns is the fight against doping,” said Zubkow. The former bobsleigh pilot is himself one of the symbolic figures for Russia's deception of the sports world.

As part of the state doping scandal, Zubkov was stripped of his two Olympic victories in Sochi 2014. Russia had covered up positive doping samples on a large scale, making it more difficult to provide evidence, but in the Zubkov case the evidence is considered particularly reliable.

The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) ruling states, among other things, that two of Zubkov's samples were manipulated. In addition, key witness Grigory Rodchenkov said in his testimony that Zubkov had used banned substances for a “long time.” The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed the removal of the folk hero from the results lists in Sochi. Zubkov recently announced that he would no longer take action against it.

Despite the scandal, Russian winter athletes who were not banned were allowed to take part in the Winter Games in Pyeongchang last February as “Olympic athletes from Russia”. Two Russians also tested positive in South Korea, one of the cases came from Zubkov's association: Bobsleigh pilot Nadezhda Sergeyeva was found to have a banned stimulant.
