Bob: Friedrich wins the start of the World Cup in Sigulda

Sigulda (SID) Double Olympic champion Francesco Friedrich (Oberbärenburg) underlined his exceptional position in the two-man bobsleigh right at the start of the season. The 28-year-old won the World Cup in Sigulda, Latvia with pusher Alexander Schüller and distanced second-placed local hero Oskars Kibermanis by 0,42 seconds. Benjamin Maier from Austria came third, Nico Walther (Oberbärenburg) landed in sixth place with pusher Paul Krenz. World Cup debutant Christoph Hafer (Bad Feilnbach), who replaces the ailing Johannes Lochner (Stuttgart) in Sigulda, took a good seventh place with Issam Ammour. Friedrich and Co. are competing in Latvia without some of their biggest competitors: The Canadians around Justin Kripps, who won two gold medals at the same time as Friedrich at the Winter Games in February, are missing in Latvia. For the German sleds it was the second victory in the second race of the season; on Friday, Olympic champion Mariama Jamanka (Oberhof) celebrated the first World Cup success of her career. The athletes of national coach Rene Spies confirm their form at the Olympic Games: In Pyeongchang, Jamanka and Friedrich secured three German gold medals in the three races. On Sunday (12.00 p.m.) the first World Cup stop of the World Cup winter will conclude with another men's two-man race. The large four-man bobsleighs are not allowed to start on the narrow track near the capital Riga.
