Friedrich gets a double victory in Sigulda

The 28-year-old also won the second two-man bobsleigh race in Sigulda, Latvia, on Sunday with pusher Martin Grothkopp, thereby underlining his exceptional position. On Friday, Olympic champion Mariama Jamanka (GER) celebrated the first World Cup success of her career in the women's category.

Friedrich was crowned Olympic champion in the pairs and fours in Pyeongchang in February, and the Saxon also holds the world championship titles in both sleds. On Sunday he won with a lead of six hundredths of a second over the Latvian Oskars Kibermanis. World Cup debutant Christoph Hafer (GER), together with pusher Tobias Schneider, set a real exclamation mark with third place.

Friedrich won the first men's race on Saturday with Alexander Schüller at the brakes. However, the German sleds competed in Latvia without some of their biggest competitors: the Canadians led by Justin Kripps, who won two-man gold at the Winter Games in February at the same time as Friedrich, were missing from the World Cup opener, as were the bobsleigh teams from Italy, among others with Patrick Baumgartner and Alex Verginer.

The next World Cup is coming up next weekend on the home track in Winterberg. There the men ride twice in fours because the large sledges were not allowed to start on the narrow track in Sigulda.
