In the women's sled to gold: Friedrich is Olympic champion

The record world champion from Saxony won the Winter Games in China after four runs with a lead of 0,49 seconds over his teammate Johannes Lochner. With Christoph Hafer, another German came third and achieved the first triple success in Olympic bobsleigh history.

In order to repeat the success in Pyeongchang, Friedrich had thrown his plans aside shortly before the first run on Monday and switched to Kim Kalicki's bobsleigh. The sleigh, like Friedrich's first choice, was built by the Berlin Institute for the Research and Development of Sports Equipment, but was designed to be faster for the current conditions on the Olympic track. In the first run, the German flag bearer raced to a track record of 59,02 seconds with the new vehicle. In the third run, Friedrich once again demonstrated his supremacy, pushing the track record to 58,99 seconds. At the end, Friedrich once again set the best time in the field.

This weekend, Friedrich wants to go down in bobsleigh history with his second coup. No pilot has ever managed to win both competitions at consecutive Winter Games. For Patrick Baumgartner, however, the Olympic premiere did not go as planned. The bobsleigh pilot from Issing and his pusher Robert Mircea were already in 21st place after the first two runs, which took place on Monday.
