Calgary: Olympic referendum on November 13th

The city council of Canada's 1988 Olympic hosts approved on Wednesday a continuation of the campaign and a financing plan drawn up the day before by the state and the province of Alberta. Calgary residents will now vote on the application in a referendum on November 13th.

This means that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will initially retain all three applicants for the Winter Games in eight years. In addition to Calgary, Stockholm and Milan are also in the running. However, it is also unclear for the Swedes and Italians whether they will be able to maintain their applications until the host is chosen at the IOC Congress in Lausanne in June 2019. Stockholm's new city council has already spoken out against the campaign. Milan, which competes together with Cortina d'Ampezzo, still lacks government support. At the beginning of October, the IOC removed the Turkish applicant Erzurum from the list of possible candidates for 2026.

Calgary's municipal Olympic committee spoke out against an application on Tuesday. The slightly reduced financial commitment from the state and provincial governments of 2,88 billion Canadian dollars (1,93 billion euros) did not find a majority in the city council: eight council members voted against the plan, only seven for it, including Mayor Naheed Nenshi. However, ten no votes would have been needed to cancel the application.
