CONI lists 51 South Tyrolean Olympic starters

In its structure, the CONI speaks of 51 South Tyroleans. However, this number is not correct, because it also includes the two ski racers Stefano Gross and Emanuele Buzzi, who were born in South Tyrol (in Bolzano and Innichen respectively) but live in Pozza di Fassa and Sappada/Bladen respectively.

The number reduced to 49 would also be very high and would mean that three more South Tyrolean winter athletes would go to the Olympics than four years ago, when 4 South Tyroleans took part in Sochi.

Only 18 Lombards and 14 Trentinos What is impressive is the fact that, according to CONI, small South Tyrol will have by far the largest contingent in the “Azzurri” Olympic team. The second largest group behind the 51 and 49 South Tyroleans is Lombardy with 18 and Trentino with 14 Olympic starters.

The CONI list is certainly not far from reality, but a few doubts arise, for example when comparing it with the list “SportNews” forecasts from January 9th .

All four snowboard starting places for South Tyroleans?

For snowboarders, for example, it is desirable, but quite unlikely, that all four available starting places go to South Tyroleans. Last time in Bad Gastein, Maurizio Bormolini from Livigno, who does not appear on the CONI list, was significantly better than Christoph Mick, Roland Filehner, Aaron March and Edwin Coratti.

The situation is a little different with the Nordic combined athletes, where, given this year's very poor results, it remains to be seen whether a team will be taken to South Korea or just individual athletes like Alessandro Pittin. From a South Tyrolean perspective, it is strange that the young Aaron Kostner does not appear on the CONI list, although he was at least able to qualify for World Cup races like the one recently held in Fiemme Valley, in contrast to the listed veteran Lukas Runggaldier, who owes a lot this year.

The CONI list names no less than 11 Alpine from South Tyrol

In the Alpine category, which is generously awarded 11 starting places by CONI, it is a bit surprising that Patrick Thaler, Verena Stuffer and Nicol Delago are listed, while Anna Hofer was not taken into account. It is possible that all four will not go to Pyeongchang unless they achieve top results in the next few days.

Participation in the Olympics also seems very unlikely for two other athletes named by CONI: ski jumper Evelyn Insam has not yet been able to make an appearance this season, while biathlete Karin Oberhofer has not yet been used in the World Cup.

One of the few names of possible Olympic starters that is missing from the CONI list is that of bobsledder Patrick Baumgartner, who still has a real chance of being called up, especially in the four-man bobsleigh.

CONI lists 51 South Tyrolean Olympic starters

With a view to the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the final push for the coveted starting places is underway. CONI, the Italian Olympic Committee, lists 121 names of Olympic starters on its homepage, almost half of which come from South Tyrol.
