The World Cup in Rabenstein is coming into focus

There is a not insignificant difference between Alpine ski racers and ice climbers: While the ski professionals currently only move in the Alpine region, the ice climbers travel around two continents. While the world's best ice acrobats were in action in Beijing, China, at the beginning of January and in Cheongsong, South Korea, last weekend, the World Cup will continue this week in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Then we continue to Rabenstein, where the fifth World Cup stage of this winter is on the program from Friday, January 27th to Sunday, January 29th. It is also the dress rehearsal for the Ice Climbing World Championships, which will take place in France in February.

In Rabenstein, climbing takes place on the impressive, 15 meter high and around 30 meter wide steel structure, which is surrounded by a meter-thick layer of ice. Cross passages and overhangs with a large incline make the already difficult task almost impossible. But only almost, because only the very best athletes from all over the world take part in the World Cup and they master the difficult routes on the South Tyrolean ice.

The entire ice climbing elite is at the start 100 ice climbers from 20 different nations and three different continents have already registered for the top sporting event, including local hero and three-time world champion Angelika Rainer from Merano. The Tomilov brothers Maxim and Alexey from Russia, the Korean World Cup leader Hee Yong Park and his compatriots Han Na Rai Song, or WoonSeon Shin, the Swiss Petra Klingler - the entire ice climbing elite is at the start in Rabenstein.

As far as the preparations are concerned, OC boss Reinhard Graf and his team are absolutely on target: “The conditions at the ice tower in Rabenstein have rarely been as optimal as they were this year. Of course, the bitter polar cold of the past few days is definitely playing into our hands. But it's not just the facility that is in perfect condition. All other preparations are running like clockwork. There’s nothing stopping us from having an ice climbing festival in just over a week.”

The Ice Climbing World Cup will officially open on Friday, January 27th at the Thermenplatz in Meran from 17 p.m. Saturday (January 28th) begins with the qualification for the difficult climbing (Lead/from 9.15). In the afternoon, the first decisions will be made in speed climbing from 18.30:8.15 p.m. The extensive competition program continues on Sunday morning with the semi-finals in difficult climbing (from 13). The final takes place from XNUMX p.m.
