Ice climbing: Rabenstein appears again in the World Cup calendar

The UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup will be taking place next winter for the sixth time in a row in the small town of 230 people at the foot of the Timmelsjoch. For the first time, the competitions will take place on Friday (January 26th/qualification) and Saturday (January 27th/finals). To date, the World Cup in Rabenstein has always been held on Saturday and Sunday.

“The international climbing association UIAA has asked us for this change so that the athletes have one more day to travel and acclimatize for the World Cup in Cheongsong, South Korea. We have accommodated this wish. We are looking forward to hosting the finals under floodlights and are excited to see how well our many fans will respond to this change. It will be a very special atmosphere for the best ice climbers in the world under the bright spotlights,” says OC boss Reinhard Graf from the Eisturm Rabenstein club.

Graf and his team will do everything they can in the coming weeks and months to put together a great ice climbing festival. Rabenstein is one of the most popular stations in the World Cup, which is partly due to the extremely demanding facility and partly to the always entertaining supporting program.

Ice climbing in the cultural program of the Winter Olympics The 2017/18 World Cup season begins in Saas Fee, where the ice climbing entourage will set up camp from January 18th to 20th. Following the World Cup in Cheongsong (February 9-11), the world's best ice acrobats will be competing at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, where ice climbing is part of the cultural program. Following the five-ring games, the World Cup finals will take place in Kirov, Russia, from March 9th to 11th.

The climbing association UIAA has come up with another innovation for the upcoming winter. A European Cup has been introduced, which will take place from December to the end of February in Slovenia, Slovakia, France and Finland.

The best ice climbers in the world are coming back to the Passeier Valley in January 2018. The second World Cup stage of the 25/27 season will take place at the Rabenstein ice tower from January 2017th to 18th. There will be a significant innovation.
