Carolina Kostner: “I hope that Alex can now be himself again” - VIDEO

No questions were allowed about Alex Schwazer at the press conference called by the Despar Group as the main sponsor of “Opera On Ice”. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old from Val Gardena briefly commented on the doping scandal involving the Olympic champion from Kalch. “I cannot condone what Alex did. I too am very upset about his behavior. That from a sporting perspective. On a human level, I have seen Alex suffer a lot in the past few months and I appreciate what he did after it became known, namely owning up to his mistakes - in front of the cameras. I know he will count for his mistake. But I also know that he is now free of his demons in his head. I wish that he can be happy now. I also want that for myself, namely that Alex is again the free person I met four years ago,” said Kostner.

There is a lot of reporting on the negative headlines in sports, Kostner continued. “It makes me sad to think that Alex was only on the front pages for one day when he won the gold medal. “Now it was printed on the front pages for a week,” Kostner pointed out.

Next assignment: “Opera On Ice”

Afterwards, Carolina Kostner spoke about her future. The world figure skating champion will next be seen on September 22nd at the Verona Arena. “Opera On Ice” will be performed there.

“I'm really looking forward to this event because it's a unique combination. Athletes and musicians work together on the ice. I will be working with Stephane Lambiel. It's unusual for me because I've never been involved in pair skating before. It will be a unique experience and I’m excited to see what it will be like,” said Kostner.

The sporting future

“After last season I thought a lot about my future. Many people have told me to quit because I'm at the peak of my career. But I still enjoy what I do. Together with my coach and the association we decided that I would not take part in the Grand Prix. “I will prepare differently and pay more attention to my body, also to prevent possible injuries,” said the native of Val Gardena.

Kostner wants to be there in Sochi in 2014, it would be her third Olympic Games in a row. “I will prepare like I am doing now. I will have a lot of time for my friends and also to go on vacation. If I don't get any medals then that's okay too. My happiness does not depend on winning a medal. My goal is to give the audience emotions. In competitions, it is not always said that the best will win,” concludes Carolina Kostner.
