Carolina Kostner is hunting for her sixth World Cup medal in Saitama

From Wednesday to Sunday, the best figure skaters in the world will fight for World Championship medals in Saitama. The Japanese city north of Tokyo is hosting the World Figure Skating Championships for the first time. Around 180 athletes have registered to take part, including Carolina Kostner from Val Gardena.

In February, the 27-year-old from Ortisei broke the last taboo at the Olympic Games in Sochi and completed her collection with Olympic bronze. But the South Tyrolean doesn't have enough yet. She will now be hunting for her sixth World Championship medal at the international title fights in Japan.

Nine years ago for the first time on the World Cup podium

Carolina Kostner was recently able to reach the podium at the World Championships three times in a row, and the goal is to continue this series in Saitama. Her success story at the World Championships began in the 2004/05 season when she won bronze in Moscow. Three years later she won silver in Gothenburg and bronze again in Moscow in 2011. In Nice two years ago she finally fulfilled her dream of her first World Championship gold, while last year she was named vice world champion despite a nosebleed before the start of the free skate.

Kostner as the big favorite

After breaking her personal points record at the Olympic Games in Sochi (216,73 points), the best figure skater in South Tyrol is the favorite in her 12th World Cup participation. Her closest competitors include the young European champion from Russia Julia Lipnitskaia (best performance of the season: 209,72 points), the two-time world champion Mao Asada from Japan (207,59 points) and the US champion Gracie Gold (205,53 points).

The Val Gardena native made her first appearance at the World Championships in Saitama on Thursday in the women's short program. The free program and therefore also the medal decision are scheduled for Saturday.
