Carolina Kostner and Dominik Paris win the “Athlete Choice”

A total of 42 athletes (17 women and 25 men) were available to readers over the past few weeks. Dominik Paris is clearly at the top of the list in favor of South Tyrolean sports fans this year. The World Cup skier from Ultental, who celebrated his 24th birthday last Sunday, collected no fewer than 23.240 votes. Paris just completed his best season as a professional athlete. On December 29, 2012, he won his first World Cup race: at the same time as Hannes Reichelt, he won the downhill on the Stelvio slope in Bormio. His second victory came four weeks later, on January 26, 2013 on the “Streif” in Kitzbühel. At the 2013 World Championships in Schladming he won the silver medal in the downhill. His successes and his carefree nature have made “Domme” soar in the popularity of South Tyrolean sports fans. Last year he took fifth place in the athlete election as a newcomer. He swapped places with snowboarder Roland Fiwickeler. Last year's winner is in fifth place this year.

In this year's election, Paris clearly prevailed over Andreas Seppi. The Kalter tennis professional, who made it into the top twenty players in the world for the first time last season, collected 7.288 votes. Third place went to Christof Innerhofer (3.562 votes)

Meanwhile, Carolina Kostner continues to lead the popularity scale among women. Europe's best figure skater already won the athlete's election last year and in 2004. Kostner won almost everything there was to win last winter. Whether at the Italian Championships, the Challenge Cup, the Golden Spin or the European Championships – the 26-year-old from Val Gardena was always at the top of the podium. The European Championship title in Zagreb was already the fifth in her career. Kostner also won the silver medal at the World Championships in Canada.

The podium is completed by Claudia Schuler and Tania Cagnotto. This is an enormous success, especially for the Paralympics participant from Plaus, because you should remember that she managed to get 11.186 votes straight away and thus clearly relegated Cagnotto to third place. The world-class diver received 3.741 votes.

At the 26th athlete election, Thomas Bachlechner was also honored for his successful career in professional football. The striker from Bruneck ended his career due to injury in the winter after numerous seasons in Serie C1, Serie C2 and Serie D. Bachlechner, along with all other South Tyrolean athletes, was celebrated for a long time by the more than a thousand ball guests in the Kursaal.

The Ossi Pircher youth prize, however, went to the artificial track luger Dominik Fiwickeler from Meransen and the Vinschger cyclist Anna Zita Maria Stricker.

Carolina Kostner and Dominik Paris win the “Athlete Choice”

At the traditional sports ball on Friday evening in the Merano Kurhaus, the South Tyrolean athletes of the year were awarded for the 26th time. This year, the sports-loving “Dolomiten” readers chose skier Dominik Paris and again figure skater Carolina Kostner.
