Daniel Grassl is facing a big change

For Daniel Grassl, the past figure skating season was the most successful so far in his young career. The 20-year-old won his first medal at a Grand Prix event with bronze in Turin in November 2021, took silver at the European Championships in Tallinn in January 2022 and took home both in Beijing at his Olympic premiere and at the World Championships in Montpellier in March 7th place. The four-time Italian champion has finally arrived in the top elite and is one of the most promising talents with a view to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina.

Lorenzo Magri's student, who has found his permanent training base in the Würth Arena in Neumarkt in recent years, now wants to take the next step and move across the pond to the USA. Grassl wants to grow there, develop further and develop its potential even better. The wish for this change came from him at the end of the season and was immediately welcomed by his coaching and support team. From Neumarkt to the USA “When Daniel talked to us about his plans, we immediately offered him all our support,” says Nicoletta Ingusci, President of the Young Goose Academy Neumarkt association. “For everyone there comes a moment when you have to cut yourself some slack and this step that Daniel wants to take is very important for him in order to grow as an athlete and a person. His entire coaching team and I are fully behind Daniel and look forward to him making the decision for his new adopted home.”

It is still unclear where exactly the Merano native will train in the future. There are a few options out there at the moment, almost all of which are in the US. Grassl was recently a guest at the Skating Club of Boston in the state of Massachusetts and trained there with the Russian couple Olga Ganitscheva and Alexei Letow, who are among the top coaches in the USA. Nicoletta Ingusci was also there in Boston and wanted to get an impression of the new potential training facility. The choice has not yet been made “Boston offers a very good infrastructure and a very professional atmosphere in which Daniel felt very comfortable. But he will look at other options and make a decision as soon as he feels ready.”

There are still a few weeks left before things get serious again for the European runner-up, as the new season is almost around the corner. In the first half of the season there will be Grand Prix events again, as well as other international competitions. The European Championships will take place in Espoo, Finland, in January 2023, where Grassl could reach for another medal. The World Cup will take place at the end of March and will be held in Saitama (Japan) in 2023. Grassl could even win his first World Cup medal here.
