The 15-year-old was unable to defend her lead from the short program in Beijing on Thursday. Gold went to Russian world champion Anna Shcherbakova with 255,95 points. Her teammate Alexandra Trusova secured silver and bronze went to the Japanese Kaori Sakamoto. Valieva showed nerves and made several mistakes in the freestyle. She fell during the quadruple salchow and didn't quite succeed in the quadruple toe loop either.

The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) then allowed the European champion to take part in the women's singles in an expedited procedure. The IOC decided that there would be no award ceremony even if Valieva won another medal. However, the main issue in the case has not yet been decided. The problem of awarding medals in the individual is now off the table.

Shcherbakova showed a fabulous freestyle in which the balance of technique and artistic design became a wonderful whole. Despite only showing two quadruplets, she earned gold. Jumping prodigy Trusova showed the most difficult women's technique program at the Olympic Games with five quadruple jumps - but all of this at the expense of ice artistry and expressiveness.
