Olympic champion Hanyu cancels participation in the World Figure Skating Championships

Tokyo (SID) Japanese Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu has canceled his participation in the World Figure Skating Championships in Milan (March 19-25). The Japanese association announced this on Wednesday. Hanyu (23) had to take a two-week break due to a ligament injury to his right ankle and then complete a three-month rehabilitation period. "After a diagnosis, it is clear that I will not be able to take part in the World Championships. I will focus on treatment and rehabilitation so that I can return fully healthy as soon as possible," Hanyu was quoted as saying in the statement. According to the association, Hanyu, who won his second Olympic gold in a row at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, is also suffering from further injuries. No further details were provided. The ankle injury originally occurred in November. This means the figure skating superstar cannot defend his world title. Hanyu triumphed in Helsinki/Finland last year. The Japanese is the first individual skater since US legend Dick Button (1948 and 1952) to win gold at the Olympic Games twice in a row.
