Afterwards, Europe's best skid racers will fight for gold, silver and bronze for three days. Olympic champions, Olympic medalists, world and European champions are competing at Ritten; a total of 82 athletes from 13 different nations have qualified for the European Championships. The host nation Italy is represented by eight speed skaters, but there are no South Tyrolean athletes.

Stars have already trained in the Ritten Arena Over the past few days, Europe's best speed skaters have become familiar with the fastest open-air track in the world. The Dutch top stars around Sven Kramer and Ireen Wüst, the strong Russian athletes and Italy's medal hope Andrea Giovannini also did their laps on the Rittner Oval on Thursday.

This weekend, the top athletes are not just hunting for precious metal on the ice ring at the Arena Ritten. The international speed skating elite also want to break the current track records. 15 of these records are current outdoor records. “The conditions for new records are good. The dry weather, sunshine and temperatures around freezing point could contribute to one or two records being broken,” race director Markus Lintner is convinced.

Whether Lintner is right with his prediction will be known by Friday, January 11th at 13.30:12.55 p.m. at the latest. Then the top athletes are in action on the first distances. A good half hour beforehand, at 12 p.m., the title fights will be ceremoniously opened as part of an atmospheric ceremony. The competitions start on Saturday, January 11.05th at 13:12.30 a.m. During the afternoon the first two European Championship titles will be awarded, namely the all-around for women and the sprint all-around for men. The competition is scheduled to start on Sunday, January XNUMXth at XNUMX p.m. Then the new European champion in the four-event sprint and the new European champion in the all-around will be crowned.

The defending champions for the women are Ireen Wüst (NED/all-around) and Karolina Erbanova (CZE/sprint all-around), and for the men Sven Kramer (NED/all-around) and Kai Verbij (NED/sprint all-around). Kramer, Wüst and Verbij are competing in Klobenstein, Erbanova ended her career in the summer of 2018.
