Junior World Cup in Klobenstein: Italy narrowly misses the world record

Over 120 athletes in the under 19 age group from twenty different nations took part, unfortunately there were no speed skaters from South Tyrol. Italy, with Andrea Giovannini, Andrea Stefani and Nicola Tumolero, won the Team Pursuit in 3.56,30:3 minutes. With this time, the “Azzurri” set a new Italian record and missed the world record on open-air tracks, which Korea had just set in Klobenstein on March 2002, XNUMX, by just two hundredths of a second.

The individual competitions were otherwise dominated by the Asians, who won three of the four races.

Japanese double success over 500 m The Japanese set the tone in the 500 m sprint races. Favorite victory for Reina Anema from the Netherlands Over 1500 m, Reina Anema from the Netherlands lived up to her role as favorite and not only won today's race in Klobenstein, but also the World Cup ranking. Behind Anema, Korean Yoon-Hee Heo took second place, 28 hundredths behind, while Japanese Saori Toi came third (+64 hundredths). That was also the final score in the World Cup.

World Cup leader Kai Verbij from the Netherlands did not take part in the men's race. Victory went to China's Fan Yang in 1.53,38:XNUMX minutes, three hundredths ahead of Korea's Jeong-Su Seo. The Japanese Shota Nakamura came third. With this victory, Yang overtook Seo in the World Cup standings by just seven points.

Host Italy was unable to intervene in the individual races today. The best placing over 1500 m was achieved by Linda Bortolotti from Pinè over 1500 m and Andrea Stefani from Roana near Asiago, who both took 10th place.

Tomorrow the World Cup final will continue with the second day of racing. The program from 10 a.m. includes the 1000 and 300 m races as well as the spectacular mass start. For families there is Family Sunday with lots of fun and games in the ice rink and in the tent.
