Ter Mors wins fifth speed skating gold for the Netherlands

Pyeongchang (SID) Not a day goes without a Dutch speed skating gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang: On the fifth day of competition, the Orange skaters demonstrated their impressive dominance and once again left the competition behind. On Wednesday, Jorien ter Mors won the first sprint decision of the Games in South Korea over 1000 m. The 28-year-old beat the Japanese duo Nao Kodaira (1:13,56) and Miho Takagi (1:13,82) to the Olympic record time of 1:13,98 minutes. As expected, the three German starters had nothing to do with the decision. Gabriele Hirschbichler (Inzell/1:16,03) was the best German in 15th place, 500 m specialist Judith Dannhauer (Erfurt/1:17,41) finished in 26th place. Michelle Uhrig (Berlin/1:20,81) finished 31st and last in her Olympic debut. She canceled her start in the 1500 m race on Monday because of a cold, and she was still struggling with the effects of the infection on Wednesday. Hirschbichler earned praise from head national coach Jan van Veen, who did not fulfill her potential in twelfth place over 1500 m on Monday (1:58,24 minutes). "It's strange. Because of her run we weren't happy with twelfth place. Today she did a better job," said van Veen. Hirschbichler was also satisfied. “The first 200 meters could have been a little faster. Otherwise, I did a great second lap,” she said on ZDF. Meanwhile, ter Moers had the perfect ending on their side. The short-distance specialist, who is still competing in the short track in Pyeongchang, celebrated her first Olympic victory. Carlijn Achtereekte (3000 m), Sven Kramer (5000 m), Ireen Wüst (1500 m) and Kjeld Nuis (1500 m) had previously won gold for the Netherlands. “That was the perfect race,” said ter Mors. The next title should follow on Thursday. Victory over 10.000 m can only be won over superstar Kramer.
