FISI Awards 2015: Winter sports association honors its flagship athletes

During the ceremony, all Italian medalists from the 2014/15 winter sports season were honored, starting with Alessandro Pittin (Nordic combined, World Cup bronze in the individual competition on the normal hill/10 km) and the two cross-country skiers Federico Pellegrino and Dietmar Nöckler (not present), who were at had also won bronze in the team sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships. Among the snowboarders, however, awards were given to the two boarder crossers Luca Matteotti and Michela Moioli (gold and bronze at the World Championships in Kreischberg) as well as Roland Filehner from Villnöß, who was crowned the new world champion in the parallel slalom in Kreischberg.

The natural track toboggans were also celebrated, especially Patrick Pigneter, who secured two World Cup gold medals and his tenth overall World Cup victory this season. The leading biathletes included the successful World Cup women's relay with Dorothea Wierer, Karin Oberhofer, Nicole Gontier and Lisa Vittozzi in the spotlight, who won the bronze medal at the international title fights in Kontiolahti. Oberhofer was also honored for the historic bronze medal in the mass start.

Eight ski racers who made it to the podium in the past World Cup season also received prizes from the association sponsors, namely Dominik Paris (6 times on the podium), Stefano Gross (3), Elena and Nadia Fanchini, Federica Brignone, Daniela Merighetti, Werner Heel (all five on the podium once each) and Giuliano Razzoli (2, not present at the award ceremony).

Roda: “We have to try not to repeat the negative events” “The season ended without any medals in Alpine skiing, but the athletes in the World Cup showed that they have what it takes to be at the top. We are at least in second place in the national rankings. We have to try to understand where the shortcomings lie and not to repeat the negative events,” explained President Flavio Roda at the Prowinter in Bolzano.

Giovanni Malagò, President of the National Olympic Committee (CONI), also expressed high praise for the athletes and the Italian Winter Sports Federation: “I am happy to be able to attend such an event where the athletes are rewarded for their outstanding achievements. There were many beautiful and perhaps some less beautiful moments this past winter. However, you learn from difficult events how you should behave in the future. I would like to thank the athletes and also the federation for everything they do for Italian sport.”

Gerda Weissensteiner inducted into the “Hall of Fame”. As part of the celebration, two former sports greats were also inducted into the “Hall Of Fame” of the Italian Winter Sports Association, namely cross-country skier Franco Nones, who won gold over 1968 km at the 30 Olympic Games in Grenoble, and the South Tyrolean Gerda Weissensteiner, who was the first and so far the only “Azzurra” to have won two gold medals in two different sports at the Olympic Games: in 1994 she won gold in luge in Lillehammer, and in 2006 she secured the bronze medal in bobsleigh in Turin together with Jennifer Isacco.

FISI Awards 2015: Winter sports association honors its flagship athletes

As part of Prowinter, the trade fair for winter sports in Bolzano, the Italian winter sports association FISI once again honored its flagship athletes for special achievements in the past 2014/15 season.
