Funding checks for 13 potential Olympians

“South Tyrol is a sports country: both large, international sporting events in our country and our internationally successful athletes contribute to making South Tyrol known worldwide,” emphasized Sports Councilor Martha Stocker at the press conference. The aim of the Elite project is to financially support talented athletes with a chance of taking part in the Olympic or Paralympic Games so that they can prepare specifically for qualification and competitions.

“The state of South Tyrol and the South Tyrolean Sports Aid jointly launched the new funding program to make it easier for South Tyrolean Olympic hopefuls to combine work and competitive sports, because it is often the little things that decide on sporting success or failure at international competitions,” said the State Councilor.

The President of the South Tyrolean Sports Aid, Giovanni Podini, was pleased with the young athletes that the state government and in particular the Office for Sport and Health Promotion had launched this new form of support. “Thanks to clear criteria, young athletes can be prepared effectively and early for big goals,” said Podini at the press conference.

The Elite funding program supports South Tyrolean squad athletes with concrete prospects of taking part in the Olympic Games or Paralympics in Pyeongchang in South Korea in 2018. After an initial screening, the state committee of the relevant sports associations, the state's expert committee and Sporthilfe examine the submitted applications. Individual funding amounts to €3600 per year, and the state has provided a total of almost €40.000.

The athletes supported include Peter Schroffenegger (disabled sports/cross-country skiing), Daniel Grassl (figure skating), Nicole Botter Gomez (short track), Federica Tombolato (short track), Christoph Atz (alpine skiing), Nadia Delago (alpine skiing), Vera Tschurtschenthaler (Alpine skiing), Yanick Gunsch (Ski Freestyle), Silvia Bertagna (Ski Freestyle), Christoph Schenk (Ski Freestyle), Tobias Sieder (Ski Freestyle), Ralph Welponer (Ski Freestyle) and Evelyn Insam (Ski jumping).
